"With 'dopped in' for 'dropped in' in line 19 of page 260. Octavo (7.5 x 5.125 inches; 190 x 131 mm.). [2, blank], [2, half-title ("Books by Dashiell Hammett" on verso)], [2, title (copyright on verso)], [2, dedication (verso blank)], [2, contents], 272, [1, colophon], [5, blank] pages. Title-page printed in brown and black, with a skull and crossbones vignette in brown. Original medium yellow smooth V cloth. Front cover stamped in dark reddish orange with a skull and crossbones within a dark reddish brown single-rule border; spine stamped in five panels with decorations in red and brown against a yellow background, the title and author's name in yellow against a brown panel and the publisher's name in red against a yellow panel; rear cover stamped with brown rectangular Borzoi Books device in the lower right corner. Top and bottom edges trimmed, fore-edge untrimmed. Top edge stained brown. Just slightly skewed; cloth faded a little around the edges and spine ends; corners lightly rubbed; a few light scratch marks to top edge; endpapers slightly age-toned. Slight diagonal crease in the gutter margin from the top edge of the two center leaves in some gatherings, occasionally affecting a few letters; a few faint marginal stains or smudges; becoming over-opened between pages 166 and 167. In the original color pictorial dust jacket by F. H. Horvath. Unclipped, with the $2.00 price on the front panel. Jacket professionally restored and backed, repairing splits at spine and flap folds and a few short tears at edges; portion of top and bottom of spine renewed, including a couple of letters. A few tiny chips remain at top edge of front flap, front panel, and rear flap, and at lower edge of rear panel. Slight browning at edges and folds, most noticeable on flaps. A near fine copy in an expertly restored dust jacket. Housed in a quarter black morocco clamshell case. Layman A2.1. From the KoKo Collection.
