Dashiell Hammett. Red Harvest. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1929. First edition. Octavo. [12 blanks and preliminaries], 270, [1, note on type], [3, blank] pages. Publisher's red cloth, spine and front stamped in yellow and black, with yellow skull and crossbones ornament at front, rear with publisher's device stamped in black; top edge of text block trimmed and stained green; original first-state dust jacket. Spine a bit skewed; backstrip slightly dulled; mild wear at spine ends, with just a touch of fraying; light wear along joints; minor scuffing and soiling to boards; rear board slightly bowed; corners softly tapped with boards peeking through cloth; light edge wear. Text block somewhat browned, particularly at edges; topstain faded with a few specks of foxing toward front and rear of text block; occasional spots of soiling and staining, evidence of dog-earing throughout interior; spine split between a couple of pairs of gatherings, but still sound. Jacket tanned, with chipping at spine and flap fold ends; handful of closed tears at foot of spine and along panel folds, reinforced with clear tape at verso; soft creasing to folds; light wear and rumpling along top edge. Mild rubbing with a couple of faint spots of foxing at verso. Still, a good copy. The author's first book, originally published in four issues of Black Mask from November 1927 to February 1928. Layman A1.1.a.
