A beautiful first edition of this haunting tale, signed by the author, and winner of the National Book Award for fiction in 1938. The book served as the source material for a number of adaptations to film, television, radio, theatre, opera, and similar works, but perhaps is best remembered for the 1940 Alfred Hitchcock classic, his first American film project. The film starred Laurence Olivier as the mysterious Maxim de Winter and Joan Fontaine as the second Mrs. de Winter and released to major critical and commercial success. The film garnered an incredible eleven Academy Award nominations, of which it won Best Picture (the only Hitchcock film to do so) and Best Cinematography. The film was selected in 2018 for preservation by the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.
