Title page, dedication, list of subscribers, preface, 1-7 [introduction], list of authors and references, list of plates, 27 plates with descriptions. Illustrated with 27 hand colored lithographic plates mounted on guards, all by C. F. Tholey and J. Wolf with the exception of 2 hand-colored plates of eggs after W. S. Morgan, all printed by Bowen & Co. of Philadelphia. Bound in half leather with marbled boards, with leather label on front cover. Plates 1 and 2 show small paper loss on bottom right hand corners, description for Plate 4 has tape repair of tear on left margin and bottom, Plate 7 description has tape repair on lower left margin, Plate 9 description has tape repair of two small tears at bottom of page and one on the right hand margin, Plate 11 description has tape repairs of two tears at bottom of page; discoloration throughout and some evidence of water stains. Overall very good. A fine example of one of the most important ornithological works printed in America. The text includes various forms of information on the grouse. Zimmer 1: 205; Nissen IVB 293.
