The Rare First Edition of an Important Early American Biography, Written by Cotton Mather

Cotton Mather. Triumphs of the Reformed Religion, in America. The Life of the Renowned John Eliot ... a Memorable Evangelist among the Indians, of New England... Boston: Printed by Benjamin Harris, and John Allen, for Joseph Brunning, 1691. First edition. Small octavo. Approximately 5.75 x 3.5 inches. [vi], 152 pages. Lacking title-page. Contemporary full calf, ruled in black. Binding worn, boards detached, spine chipped with later printed library label on spine, library bookplate on front pastedown, endleaves missing, ownership markings on inside of covers and on first leaf, page 21/22 chipped and torn, page 151/152 chipped, text toned, creased, with some occasional soiling and short tears. Although this copy is only fair, it is an important American biography, being the story of Eliot's translating the bible into the Massachuset language (Eliot was the first to preach the gospel to Native Americans, and he printed the first bible in North America). Evans 568. Howes M398.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
