Cormac McCarthy. Two Autograph Letters Signed and Autograph Postcard Signed. [No place and Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, circa 1986-1987]. Both the letters and the pictorial postcard are written to McCarthy's copy editor at Random House, Bert Krantz; each is addressed, "Dear Bert." A total of two and a half quarto sheets and one twelvemo postcard. Letters are 11 x 8.5 inches; 279 x 216 mm.; postcard is 4 x 7 inches; 101 x 178 mm. Letters are on brown paper written in black and brown ink, respectively; postcard is written in black ink. Generally, some mild rubbing; two horizontal creases to letters; ink stamp and cancels to postcard; some occasional smudging to a few characters. A fine collection. These friendly letters are on a variety of topics; on one, McCarthy asks if Blood Meridian is still in print at Random House. Later in the same letter, McCarthy relates a conversation in which he heard a mutual friend complaining that rabbits were eating his garden: "They were apparently young enough that they would slip through the mesh of his fence. He said "I really don't know what to do about them. You can't just shoot a baby rabbit." Albert [possibly Albert Erskine another of McCarthy's editors at Random House] looked up from his pipe & smiled sweetly and said "Well why don't you just use the back of a hoe?" Never forget the look on Donald's face." The postcard was written "from the most southerly city on the world... Stars all on the wrong side of the sky..."
