    Description

Surgeon Major F. E. Scanlan. A to Z, Being Twenty-six Notes on a Soldier's Trumpet - Original Illustrations Together With a Mock Cover and Complete Group of 26 Illustrations From the Book of the Same Name. [London: Houghton & Gunn/Hatchards, 1876]. Scanlon's original Gouache and ink over graphite sketches, many with detailed notations to the printer and occasionally small sketches in the margins. The original sketches are mounted on 9.5 x 8.25 inch green cloth backed card stock. The image sizes vary but are on average 7.75 x 6.5 inches. The cover mock up measures approximately 11.5 x 9.25 inches. The cover drawing measures approximately 9.5 x 7.5 inches. The original sketches are accompanied by 26 printed proof pages including the printed title, illustrated title, and 24 letter pages (lacking letters "O" and "Y"). The sketches are incredibly rendered with an amazing eye to the detail of the uniforms and accoutrements. Some light scattered foxing to the proof illustrations, more so on the proof title page, otherwise in very good condition.
