Westmacott's Notorious English Spy, With Seventy-One Hand-Colored Aquatints

Bernard Blackmantle (pseudonym of Charles Molloy Westmacott). The English Spy: An Original Work, Characteristic, Satirical, and Humorous. Comprising Scenes and Sketches in Every Rank of Society, Being Portraits of the Illustrious, Eminent, Eccentric, and Notorious. London: Sherwood, Jones, and Co., 1825-1826. First edition, first issue (plate opposite page 389 in volume I misdated, and page 222 in volume II blank). Two octavo volumes. xxiii, [1, blank],417, [1, colophon]; xv, [, blank], 399, [1, colophon] pages. With seventy-one hand-colored aquatints (sixty-seven are by Robert Cruikshank, Two are by Thomas Rowlandson, and the remaining two are by T. Wageman and G. M. Brightly) inserted throughout, including the rare Rowlandson plate, "R. A's Genius..." facing page 411, which is often missing. However, this copy lacks the uncolored woodcut intended to face page 3 in volume I (which is lacking in many copies). With seventy-four intertextual woodcuts by Cruikshank, Rowlandson and others. Bound in later (late nineteenth or early twentieth century) binding of half brown morocco over marbled boards, gilt, spines tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, all edges gilt. Both volumes recased, with cloth tape reinforcement to hinges. Spines sunned, bindings somewhat worn and soiled, some leaves with tape residue along inner margin (possibly indicating an early attempt to re-attach loose leaves), offsetting from plates, tear to upper margin of page 35 in volume I (affecting some text), three gift inscriptions (one recent) on the recto of the frontispiece in volume I, and two gift inscriptions (again, one recent) on the title-page of volume II. Two gutters cracked in volume II. Overall, a very good copy.

"Described by Miss Prideaux as 'perhaps the most daring book ever published', a comment elicited by the fact that many characters in the book were drawn from life, and were, at the time of publication, undoubtedly easy to recognize." (Abbey, p. 274). Abbey, Life, 325.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
