    Alexander Wilson. American Ornithology; or The Natural History of the Birds of the United States. With a Sketch of the Author's Life by George Ord. New York and Philadelphia: Collins & Co and Harrison Hall, 1828-1829 [and] Philadelphia: Harrison Hall, 1855. Second edition of the three text volumes, later (1855) edition of the hand-colored plate volume. Together, three octavo volumes and one folio volume. cxxix, [1, blank], [1]-[231], [1, blank]; vi, 456; vi, 396 [including Index and Subscriber's Names] pages. Plate volume: [ii] pages, seventy-six hand-colored plates with mounted tissue-guards (complete). Plate volume approximately 18 x 12.5 inches. Text volumes bound in contemporary quarter red morocco over marbled boards, spines lettered in gilt; plate volume bound in contemporary half olive pebbled morocco over marbled boards, spine tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, marbled endleaves. Text volumes worn at spine with joints cracking, boards worn, endleaves and text leaves foxed, text leaves with offsetting, some occasional soiling. Plate volume somewhat worn, with front joint starting, hinges and a few gutters cracking or starting. Plates with some minor occasional thumbsoiling, yet are still quite clean with vibrant colors. Text volumes generally good, plate volume is near fine.
