London: William Bulmer, 1812. First quarto edition. Quarto. Approximately 11 x 13.25 inches. With eighty-four color stipple-engraved portraits, nearly all with textual leaf. Complete. Bound in contemporary half red levant morocco over marbled boards, spine elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, all edges gilt, marbled endleaves. Some edgewear. Still, a fine copy with the portraits and text bright and clean. Rarely found complete, this book is a magnificent collection of engravings after Holbein, featuring some of his most famous works in color. From a private collection from New Orleans.

    Portraits include: Jane Seymour, Anne Boleyn, Sir Thomas More, Edward VI, Anne of Cleves, and many others. Many of these portraits were engraved by Bartolozzi, one of the finest engravers of the period. Sir Walter Scott praised this book as "a collection which at once satisfies the imagination and the understanding, showing the most distinguished of our ancestors looked, moved, dressed, how they thought, acted, lived, and died."
