Cole Younger: His Account of the Northfield Raid as Dictated to Cora McNeill in 1896. In the hand of Cora, these two pages cover the period from when the robbery went wrong and the bandits were coming under fire from townspeople. It reads in part:

"I was forced to ride to the bank for the third time and tell them to come out and this time they did so. In the meantime Miller had been shot again, and had fallen from his horse. I jumped from my horse ran to Miller to see how badly he was hurt and while turning him was shot in the left hip. I took Miller's pistols, mounted my horse and rode toward Bob who was standing near the stairway, Jim being with me.

"At this moment Bob was shot. I saw him change his pistol from his right hand to his left, and his right arm hung limp. I knew it was broken. I called to him to come away, and turning to him, told him to catch Miller's Horse for Bob. This was done and Jim helped him to mount. I then call to Pitts to help me get Miller up on my horse, my intention being to carry him before me. On lifting him up we saw he was dead, so laid him down again and I told Pitts to run up the street out of range and I would take him up behind me. I then called to the rest of the party to move on and they started, Jim leading the horse. Bob rode about a hundred yards farther Pitts mounted behind me and we rode out of town on the Dundas road. Up to this time I did not know a citizen had been shot..."

This language appears on page 7 of an accompanying typed manuscript titled "Cole Younger's Version of the 'Northfield Raid' as told to Cora Lee McNeill," clearly gleaned from a series of interviews. The manuscript begins: "The following history of the Northfield, Minn. Raid was given me by Coleman T. Younger, as being the first and only true account given by any of the principles [sic]. Cole Younger's lips were sealed upon the subject from the day of his arrest, until the day he told me the story in June of 1897."
