William M. Timlin. The Ship That Sailed to Mars. A Fantasy. London: George G. Harrap & Co., Ltd., no date [but 1923]. First edition with rare dust jacket. Quarto. 96 leaves; 48 pages of calligraphic text mounted to thick gray paper, recto only, and illustrated with 48 color plates after the author, also mounted to thick gray paper, recto only. Publisher's quarter japon vellum over gray boards, boards lettered in dark gray, spine decorated and lettered in gilt; original illustrated dust jacket. Corners rubbed with boards showing through, head and foot of spine pushed and worn with losses affecting text. Gray endpapers; effaced ink notations and penciled bookseller notations to front free endpaper recto. Internally clean and tight, all edges trimmed, minor text block edgewear. Original illustrated dust jacket decorated in black and gilt; heavy edgewear with some losses, creased and somewhat rubbed, toning to top edges from dried cellotape residue. Very good book with good dust jacket.

A notably beautiful and scarce fantasy title in the rare dust jacket. Timlin's delicately detailed and whimsical illustrations and the deluxe binding featured here are strongly reminiscent of the magical creations of other Golden Age fantasy illustrators including Rackham and Dulac.
