    S. O. Beeton (editor). The Boy's Own Volume of Fact, Fiction, History, and Adventure. Christmas, 1863. London: S. O. Beeton, 248, Strand, W.C., Christmas, 1863. Octavo, pp. 552, profusely illustrated with full-page illustrations on inserted plates and smaller illustrations and diagrams in the text, original decorated cloth stamped in gold and blind. Rubbing to cloth, corner tips and spine ends, scattered foxing throughout, one burn-mark on a text leaf (compromising a half-dozen words) but generally good to very good.

    More Information:

A semiannual publisher's bind-up, designed as a gift book for Christmas (another was issued at Midsummer) of THE BOY'S OWN MAGAZINE, a 92-page monthly that ran from 1855 to 1874. The miscellaneous contents (as indicated by the title) are typical of both mid-Victorian journals and gift books. Most of the fiction is serialized novels, with an emphasis in this case, naturally, on adventure. Fiction in the present volume includes parts of J. G. Edgar's CRESSY AND POICTIER, William Brightly's THE YOUNG NORSEMAN, and Sir Lascelles Wraxall's UP IN THE ALPS. The nonfiction articles (on natural history and chemistry) have a serious tone -- also typical of the strong popular interest of the period in scientific developments. Wolff [7715] had seven volumes of this hybrid magazine/gift book for the period 1863-1866.
