Inscribed and Signed by Roald Dahl and Additionally Signed by Patricia Neal

Roald Dahl. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, [1964]. Later edition (with the five-line colophon). Inscribed and signed by Roald Dahl, "This book is / for / Maura Dhu / who's [sic] father we / love / Roald Dahl / and" then Neal adds in her hand, "Patricia Neal Dahl / March 1968" on the front free endpaper. Octavo. 161 pages. Illustrated by Joseph Schindelman. Publisher's red cloth, with blind-stamped title on front cover and gilt lettering on spine. Top edge stained red. Mustard endpapers. Original first issue color pictorial dust jacket, with no ISBN number on the rear panel and with the price $3.95 on the front flap. Minor edge wear to the book and jacket. Light wrinkling and spotting to the jacket. A very good copy. Interestingly, this copy is inscribed to Maura Dhu, daughter of Jack Albertson, the man who played Charlie Bucket's Grandpa Joe in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, the 1971 film version of this very story.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
