Reuben Ramble's Travels Through the Counties of England [Text by Samuel Clark]. [London]: Darton & Clark, circa 1844. First edition of the complete set of forty maps, also issued as five separate pamphlets. Square octavo. [iii], [80] pages. Illustrated with pastoral frontispiece, elaborate pictorial title, and forty maps, all hand-colored lithographs. Original gilt-lettered and gilt-ruled red pebbled cloth; minor wear, spine sunned. Green colored endpapers, all edges stained speckled red; top edge dusty. Some minor internal foxing and light spotting, hand-colored plates well preserved. Very good.

The map plates comprise detailed English county maps (uncolored) surrounded by hand-colored vignettes depicting landscapes, scenes from history, etc., related to the particular region. The maps themselves are apparently copied from those in Miller's New Miniature Atlas (1810) which William Darton reissued in 1822 and 1825.

Darton, The Dartons H249(1); Gumuchian catalogue 4731; Osborne catalogue has three (of five) separate pamphlets (see pages 180, 802).

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
