Maurice Sendak. "Moo-Reese" Tabletop Cow. [New York?]: drawn and painted by the artist, with help from Lynn Caponera, 2000. Cow sculpture hand-decorated by Sendak and his associate, with metal pail and "Max" plush doll dressed in his wolf suit, all on oblong base. 27 x 17.5 x 7.5 inches. Molded plaster figure decorated in pencil and watercolor with several characters from Where the Wild Things Are, interspersed with foliage. Background, base, and banded legs and tail filled in by Caponera under Sendak's supervision. Finished by Sendak, who situated "Max" in the metal pail and placed him under the cow's udder. Fine.

As part of the Cow Parade staged in New York, Chicago and Zurich, Sendak was invited to decorate a full-sized cow but opted instead for the present size. Sold at a 2003 fundraiser to support the Chicago Opera Theater, it was subsequently displayed in Chicago at the premiere of Brundibár, Sendak and Tony Kushner's adaptation of Hans Krása's Czech opera, that same year. It was then auctioned online by Sotheby's.

[Together with:] Justin G. Schiller and Dennis M. V. David, curators. Maurice Sendak. A Celebration of the Artist and His Work. New York: Abrams, 2013. First edition. Large quarto (11.125 x 10.5 inches; 285 x 266 mm.). 223 pages. Numerous full-color illustrations, mostly images of Sendak's art.
