    Description

    J. K. Rowling. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. [London]: Bloomsbury, [1997]. First edition, the rare uncorrected proof copy preceding publication. Octavo. 223, [1, blank] pages. In original Bloomsbury binding of white wrappers with a yellow band around the middle, and lettered in black. With the original cardstock draft mockup of what eventually became the pictorial boards for the first edition. Wrappers lettered: "Uncorrected Proof Copy" at the top of the front panel. Publishing specifics and details are printed on the rear wrapper. The title page bears the error: "J. A Rowling," while the copyright page states: "Joanne Rowling" and has the complete number row descending from 10 to 1. Wrappers soiled, creases to front and rear wrappers, general light wear and rubbing to corners, some dog-eared, paper just beginning to split a bit at the bottom of the spine, small ink mark to the front wrapper. Binding skewed, but still an attractive and rare original proof which preceded the true first edition of the first Harry Potter book, complete with the very rare, original stiff paper draft mockup of the illustrated boards. This mockup underwent several obvious changes before publication, and includes the early rendition of Dumbledore which made it to the first edition printing but was subsequently changed. (The first U. K. edition of the first Harry Potter book was issued without a dust jacket).

With the creation of Harry Potter, Hermione, Hagrid, Dumbledore, and the Dursleys, J. K. Rowling has won the hearts of children and adults around the world. This is the first book in her enormously popular seven-volume tale, chronicling the orphaned Harry's adventures as he fulfills his destiny, does his homework, plays Quidditch for Hogwarts, and defends the world against the evil wizard Voldemort.
