    The First Nicolas Edition with an Additional Set of Artist's Proofs, Gorgeously Bound by Hering

    First Nicolas edition. Large paper copy. Two large octavo volumes. [16], cxl, [6], [cxlv]-clxiv, [4], [clxv]-ccxii, [2], 129, [1, blank]; [4], [131]-436, [32] pp. Sixty-one engraved plates and vignettes printed on India paper and mounted. With an additional set of artist's proofs inserted, most before lettering, the vignettes worked on separate leaves. Title-pages printed in red and black.

    Contemporary full green hard-grain morocco by Hering (stamp-signed on the front free endpapers). Covers elaborately panelled in gilt with a central gilt medallion by T. Gosden (of Isaak Walton on the front cover and Charles Cotton on the back cover) set within an elaborate gilt frame, spines decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, with gilt crest in the top compartment, board edges ruled in gilt, turn-ins decoratively tooled in gilt, rose watered silk doublures and liners (liners decoratively tooled in gilt), all edges gilt, gauffered, and marbled. Occasional light foxing. Armorial bookplate of Robert Sedgwick on front free endpaper, armorial bookplate of C. L. F. Robinson on front flyleaf. Overall, a wonderful copy.

It has been acclaimed as the finest Angler ever published...It was the first edition to be divided into days, contains many editor's notes and comments, and has new material on Walton and Cotton" (Horne).

    "The illustrations consist of sixty-one plates, and drawings by T. Stothard, Mr. Derby, Mr. Willement, Mr. Edward Hassell, Inskipp, Pine, Augustus Fox, Delamotte, Sir Francis Sykes, Bart., Mr. Hixon, and T.S. Cape, engraved by W. Humphreys, Byfield, G. Adcock, H. Robinson, Fox, W.H. Worthington, J. Richardson, W.J. Cooke, J. G. Armytage, W.J. Wilkinson, Roberts, J. Thompson, and Freebairn" (Oliver). Large paper copy, "where all the illustrations are engraved on India paper and laid down in the text. In addition, all the 61 portraits, views, fishing scenes, head-pieces are duplicated by a set of proofs on India paper laid down and bound in, in place" (Coigney, p. 49, Copy c).
