    Description

Frances Trego Montgomery. Billy Whiskers in the South. Illustrated by Will Fitzgerald. Chicago/Akron/New York: The Saalfield Publishing Company, [1917]. First edition. Publisher's blue cloth. Very good.

    More Information:

First edition. Octavo. 148 pages plus two-page advertisement. Six full-color plates and numerous black and white text illustrations.

Publisher's blue cloth stamped in gilt and black. Moderate shelf wear to the book. Scattered minor foxing, mostly at the endpapers. Binding over-opened at page 108. Still, a very good copy.

Several illustrations and two of the color plates reveal a rather stereotypical view of black people in the rural South, especially the frontispiece, which shows two goats laughing at the bottom of a scene illustrating a white farmer shooting at four minstrel-like black people who try to flee after they are caught stealing watermelons. The caption underneath reads: "DON' SHOOT! DON' SHOOT! I'SE NEBER GWAN TO STEAL NO MO' YO' MELONS!"

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
