The Rare First Edition in Dust Jacket of Eric Carle's Award-Winning The Very Hungry Caterpillar - Signed by Him

Eric Carle. The Very Hungry Caterpillar. New York: The World Publishing Company, [1969]. First edition. Signed by Carle on the page facing the title-page. Oblong quarto. [24] pages. Several pages with die-cut holes from where the very hungry caterpillar ate various foods. Publisher's glossy pictorial boards, price-clipped dust jacket. Jacket toned and thumbsoiled, with several tears (with accompanying tape repairs to verso), upper corners of jacket bumped, binding just a bit toned. Still, a very good copy. This book was printed in Japan, because no American printer could produce the different-sized leaves with the die-cut holes as economically. This book has won several awards, including the American Institute of Graphic Arts Award in 1970, the Selection du Grand Prix des Treize in France in 1972, and the Nakamori Reader's Prize in Japan in 1975. In 2012, it was voted the second most popular children's picture book ever in a survey of School Library Journal readers. The rarity of the first edition of The Very Hungry Caterpillar cannot be overstated. While it is true that there have been over 30 million copies of this title printed, very few of the first editions have survived, especially with the extremely rare dust jacket. In addition, we can find no records of a signed first edition having ever appeared at auction.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
