    Description

Inscribed by E. B. White and Signed by Garth Williams

    E. B. White. Stuart Little. New York: Harper & Brothers, [1945]. First edition, first printing. Inscribed by White on the half-title page, "For Max / from E B White." Illustrated by Garth Williams and signed by him in pencil on the lower margin of the frontispiece. Octavo. 131 pages. Publisher's tan cloth with mild rubbing and bumping to extremities. Front hinge cracked after half-title. Inscribee has placed his childhood inscription on the title page, "Max the / Mouse", with a small, smiling mouse face drawn below, all in green ink. Slight toning and thumbing to leaves. Price-clipped and lightly tattered dust jacket shows minor rubbing and toning with small tears and chips to ends. Fold at front inner flap is a bit worn from rubbing. Laid in is a card, inscribed by White's niece, presenting this copy to a former owner. A very good copy and rarely offered with both signatures.

More Information: The character of Stuart Little came to White in a dream as he traveled by train to New York. White said Stuart appeared to him "all complete, with his hat, his cane, and his brisk manner." Though he began the manuscript in 1938, White did not complete the work until the winter of 1944-45. White's editor at Harper had difficulty finding the perfect illustrator, complaining that "it is terribly difficult to draw attractive mice" and went through no less than eight illustrators before finally signing Garth Williams, a prize-winning sculptor. Williams would also illustrate White's next book, Charlotte's Web. Though not warmly received by the literary community when first published, Stuart Little quietly gained an audience that now spans generations.
