[Walt Disney]. Ward Greene. Lady and the Tramp. The Story of Two Dogs. Pictures by Joe G. Rinaldi. New York: Simon and Schuster, [1953]. First edition, signed by Walt Disney in blue crayon on the title-page. Octavo (8.25 x 5 inches; 209 x 126 mm.). [140] pages. Publishers' quarter brown cloth backstrip over light blue cloth boards, front board and spine lettered in dark blue; in original dust jacket, possible later issue, while corresponding to the first issue in every respect, it has a promotional movie tie-in sticker on the front panel. Spine sunned; spine and corners rubbed; some apparent minor bumping to joints; light foxing to text; minor foxing to endleaves. Dust jacket spine a bit sunned; some mild edgewear to spine and panels; one creased tear to upper edge of front jacket panel; some scuffing to rear jacket panel. Very good. From the James C. Seacrest Collection.More Information: The Lady and Tramp story development began in 1937 at the Disney studios. Walt Disney always thought the story was missing something until he read "Happy Dan, the Whistling Dog," a story published in Cosmopolitan Magazine, written by Ward Greene. Disney bought the rights to this story, and used it to enhance the plot, which added the new character Tramp, and other elements. Author Ward Greene did a novelization of Lady and Tramp and the book was released in 1953, two years before the movie. The book has a forward by Walt Disney with artwork throughout the book by longtime Disney story man Joe Rinaldi. The sticker on the front of the jacket is unusual, with few copies found with it; it is possible that Disney used this copy and added this sticker as a way to promote his movie two years after publication.
