    Description

[Sarah Catherine Martin]. A Continuation of The Comic Adventures, of Old Mother Hubbard, and Her Dog. By S. C. M. [and] A Sequel to The Comic Adventures, of Old Mother Hubbard, and Her Dog. By another Hand. London: J. Harris, Jany. 1st 1806 and March 1st, 1806. Both first editions. A Continuation... Sixteenmo. [16] leaves comprised of a copper-engraved frontispiece, title page, and fourteen plates, each with verse caption. Original printed wrappers, soiled and a bit rubbed and wrinkled, a few stains, early stitched repairs to spine. Some scattered marginal staining throughout, small closed tear to frontispiece without loss. Ink ownership to verso of frontispiece. Good.
First edition of Martin's continuation of her great original nonsense book, first published by Harris in June, the previous year. A wonderful example of Harris's marketing genius (proving once again he was a true descendant of John Newbery), capitalizing on the success of the original Old Mother Hubbard, with a full-page ad for the previous title on the rear wrapper.

Moon 561(1); Opie, Three Centuries of Nursery Rhymes, 510 (1807 printing).

A Sequel... Sixteenmo. [14] leaves comprised of a copper-engraved frontispiece, title page, dedication page, and eleven plates, each with verse caption. Original printed wrappers, soiled and a bit rubbed and wrinkled, a few stains, early stitched repairs to spine. Internally generally clean, some minor scattered foxing and other soiling. Ink ownership to verso of frontispiece. Very good.

First edition of the third and final continuation of Sarah Martin's great nonsense juvenile, here with a dedication signed "W. F." The "Sequel" appears to be rarer than the previous "Continuation," and Moon notes "no copy of [the first edition] has been seen in its original covers." A wonderful example of Harris's marketing genius (proving once again he was a true descendant of John Newbery), capitalizing on the success of the original Old Mother Hubbard, with a full-page ad for the previous titles on the rear wrapper.

Moon 562(1); Opie, Three Centuries of Nursery Rhymes, 511 (1807 printing).
