    The Scarce 1912 Deluxe Edition

[Arthur Rackham, illustrator]. J. M. Barrie. Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. From The Little White Bird by J.M. Barrie. A new edition. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. London: Hodder & Stoughton, [n.d., 1912].

Deluxe edition, one of fifty (or so) copies. (This book was never issued with a limitation page signed by Rackham.) Large quarto (10 15/16 x 8 5/8 inches; 279 x 219 mm.). [2], viii, [2], [1, illustration], [1, blank], 122, [1], [1, printer's imprint] pages. Fifty mounted color plates, with descriptive tissue guards. Seven full-page black and white drawings and fifteen black and white drawings in the text. Map of Kensington Gardens on the verso of the contents leaf.

Beautifully bound in full green levant morocco. Covers ruled in gilt, front cover decoratively stamped in gilt to match artwork from original binding, spine ruled and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others uncut. Pages lightly toned. Some minor foxing. A superb copy of this very rare book.

A reprint of the 1906 edition with a new color frontispiece and an additional seven full-page black and white drawings. The additional black and white drawings add a new depth to Rackham's already acclaimed illustration of Barrie's classic tale. The new frontispiece is of Peter Pan, as a little boy in a nightgown, on the Baby Walk in Kensington Gardens with two fairies fleeing from him while the Elderberry and Elm trees and the other fairies look on. The frontispiece replaced the "Fairies of the Serpentine," which was the eighth color plate in the 1906 edition.

    Latimore and Haskell, p. 40. Riall, p. 114.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
