    Sixty-four Engraved Plates
and Five Large Folding Atlas Maps

Charles Wilkes. Narrative of the United States Exploring Expedition. During the Years 1838, 1839, 1840, 1841, 1942. ... In Five Volumes, and an Atlas. Philadelphia: Lea & Blanchard, 1845. Third edition. Five octavos and matching atlas volume. lx, 434; xv, 476; xv, 438; xvi, 539; xv, 558 pages; and atlas. Sixty-four engraved plates after A.T. Agate and J. Drayton (with tissue guards), nine double page maps, five large fold-out atlas maps (one of which is hand-colored); and 295 engraved vignettes and in-text woodcuts. This was the last edition to include the atlas.
Publisher's blind stamped brown cloth with a gilt design of an American eagle and sailing ships on the water centered on the covers of the five text volumes, gilt titles and device on spines; atlas volume with same blind stamped pattern with gilt titles on front cover and spine, same eagle design on rear cover.
Bindings rubbed and lightly soiled, corner bumps, edge wear with small chips, small spine end tears, cloth backstrip of volume two torn along front joint partially exposing spine, minor surface loss to foot of volume four, cracked joints; holograph pencil book dealer's notes on front fly-leaf of first volume, image offset to some facing text pages, some over-opened pages, volume one textblock split between pages 152 and 153, foxing to varying degrees, occasional soiling, dampstains (heavier in volumes four and five, affecting plates), edge tears, pages lightly cockled and creased. Atlas volume: hand-colored fold-out map torn and loose, maps with edge and fold wear, small fold separations, few tears. A good set of this remarkable work.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
