More Information: Charles Sumner. The Works of Charles Sumner. Boston: Lee and Shepard, 1874-77. Twelve octavo volumes. Publisher's three-quarter brown calf over marbled boards, spine compartments with gilt paneling containing central arabesques, red morocco gilt lettering labels, marbled endpapers and edges. A very attractive set. Sumner is probably best known as the victim of a vicious caning on the Senate floor in May 1856 by Representative Preston R. Brooks, a vehement apologist for slavery and the relative of South Carolina Senator Butler, who Sumner had attacked in a speech entitled "The Crime Against Kansas", a polemic against the Kansas-Nebraska bill. Sumner was forced to resign his Senate seat in part as a result of ill-health that followed the assault, but was reelected four years later, when he became the new Republican party's leading representative. Sumner was one of the first Senators to argue for emancipation and equal civil rights for African-Americans. "His courageous crusading and the lofty eloquence of his speeches are preserved in his Works Longfellow wrote a memorial tribute 'Charles Sumner,' in 1874, and Thomas Wentworth Higginson recalls him in Contemporaries (1884)" (The Oxford Companion to American Literature).
