"The Best Contemporary Account of the Revolution Written from the British Side"

Charles Stedman. The History of the Origin, Progress, and Termination of the American War. London: Printed for the Author, 1794.

First edition. Two octavo volumes. xv, 399, seven maps; xv, 449, [7, index] pages, eight maps.

Contemporary tree calf with a sprinkled panel at the center of each cover, spines gilt, red and green morocco labels, joints renewed. Marbled endpapers. Contents generally bright with some foxing and offsetting of maps. Armorial bookplate on the front pastedown of each volume. A handsome set of this important work, in very good condition.

According to Sabin, this is "generally considered the best contemporary account of the Revolution written from the British side." Stedman was born in Philadelphia of English parents and educated at William and Mary College in Virginia. Stedman, a Loyalist, served under Howe, Clinton and Cornwallis. He was twice captured and sentenced to death as a rebel but escaped on both occasions. The maps accompanying this work are fine plans of the important Revolutionary engagements, and are considered by some to be the best maps of the war.
