In a Beautiful Art Deco Binding by the Harcourt Bindery

Charles-Paul de Kock. The Works of Charles Paul de Kock. In Fifty Volumes. Boston: The Frederick J. Quinby Company, [1902-1908]. Memorial Edition. Limited to 250 numbered sets, this copy unnumbered. Twenty-five octavo volumes (as best as we can tell, this publisher never completed the full fifty intended volumes of this author's works, only completing forty two of them; however, according to auction records, the most common number of volumes of de Kock's Works available on the market by this publisher (in any edition of his works) is twenty five volumes). Etched frontispiece portrait in Volume I by Jacques Reich after Gigoux, and text illustrations from original watercolors and drawings by G.A. Williams, E. Boyd Smith, W.M. Crocker, Sidney L. Smith, A.I. Keller, William Glackens, Walter Russell, Louis Meynell, and E. Shinn. Descriptive tissue guards. Titles with decorative border printed in green, orange, and black. Decorative head- and tail-pieces and initials printed in red and black. With a general introduction by Jules Claretie. Translated into English by Mary Hanford Ford and Edith Mary Norris. Three-quarter red levant morocco gilt over marbled boards by The Harcourt Bindery. Spines in four compartments with three raised bands, gilt-lettered in three compartments, the remaining compartment decoratively tooled in gilt in a floral design with multicolored morocco onlays, top edge gilt, others uncut, marbled endpapers. Some mild occasional rubbing to bindings, three headcaps chipped. Still, a near fine collection.

Charles-Paul de Kock (1794-1871), "prolific and immensely popular author of rollicking, risky, or more often frankly coarse, frequently sentimental, and fundamentally good-natured novels. Written with an untiring comic vigour which made up for their complete lack of style, they were also good pictures of the life and amusements of the people in Paris and the country c. 1825-45. They were read and enjoyed in England (by Macaulay and Elizabeth Barrett Browning among others); and at a time when Balzac and G. Sand were exciting interest in France they were more representative of contemporary French fiction for the average English reader than the works of these authors" (The Oxford Companion to French Literature).

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
