    More Information:

Charles Lyell. The Geological Evidences Of The Antiquity Of Man. London: John Murray, 1863. First edition.

Octavo. [2], xii, 520, 32 [publisher's ads] pages. Complete with half-title and fifty-eight textual illustrations (including frontispiece). Publisher's pebble-grain blind-stamped greenish blue cloth with gilt ornaments of prehistoric tools on front, brown endpapers. Rebacked in later matching greenish-blue paper, with printed paper spine label. Bookplate on front pastedown, embossed stamp on front free endpaper, ink stamps on title-page, bookseller's ticket on rear pastedown. Some gilt paint on front cover (evidence that the gilt was enhanced at a later date?), hinges repaired. A good copy.

Lyell's third great work, The Antiquity of Man, appeared in 1863, and ran through three editions in one year. In this he gave a general survey of the arguments for man's early appearance on the earth, derived from the discoveries of flint implements in post-Pliocene strata in the Somme valley and elsewhere; he discussed also the deposits of the Glacial epoch, and in the same volume he first gave in his adhesion to Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.
