Charles Dickens. The Village Coquettes: A Comic Opera in Two Acts. London: Richard Bentley, 1836. First edition. Octavo. 71, [1, printer's imprint] pages. Sumptuous full red crushed morocco by Birdsall with gilt spine titles and decorations inside two raised bands, triple-ruled boards enclosing a smaller triple-ruled frame with fleur-de-lis cornerpieces. Elaborately-stamped gilt inner dentelles. Stamp-signed by the binder on the bottom, front turn-in. Marbled endpapers. With a beautiful Cosway-style painting affixed to the front flyleaf. Some rubbing to the extremities, with light abrading to the spine head. Previous owner's inscription of a Bible verse to the verso of the front free endpaper. Minor scattered foxing. Very good.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
