Third-person letter written on behalf of Charles Dickens mounted to a binder's blank in the front of Volume I: "Mr. Charles Dickens begs to inform / Messrs. Moore and Co. in answer to their / [--] relative to the address of this / letter Mr. G. M. Dickens, that he has / no [--] to whom those initials [superscript: "as [--]"] belong, / Broadstairs, Kent. / First October 1841." Forty volumes bound in eighty. Octavo (9 x 6 inches; 227 x 153 mm.). Various paginations. Title-pages printed in red and black with woodcut of the author's initials. Illustrated with reproductions of original title-pages, frontispieces, engraved and woodcut plates, as well as other illustrations and various facsimiles on India paper with captioned tissue-guards. Contemporary brown calf, boards triple-ruled in gilt, spines tooled in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, three dark brown gilt morocco lettering labels on spines; gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endleaves. Top edges gilt, other edges rough-trimmed. Spines uniformly a bit dull, some rubbing and light occasional soiling to boards, some moderate wear to spines. Text with some occasional foxing throughout. Very good.
