With a Signed Check by Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club. New York: George D. Sproul, 1902. Three thick octavo volumes from Sproul's Autograph Edition of the Complete Works of Charles Dickens, one of 250 copies signed by the publisher. With a check signed by Charles Dickens mounted (with both sides visible) on an inserted blank. Dated First February 1864, check number 00454. Check is approximately 3 x 7.25 inches, drawn on "Mess. Coutts & Compy." check paper ; check is made out in Dickens' hand to "W. Ring" in the amount of "Twelve pounds, Thirteen Shillings, and six pence" and signed by him. Two minor ink markings on verso. Volumes are extensively illustrated. Bound in publisher's full burgundy buckram, printed paper labels to spines. Bindings worn, most hinges either weak or cracking, dampstaining to lower portion of volume I (not affecting check, just barely showing to lower corner of mount), mounted large folding plate, "Sam Weller's Scrap Sheet" in the rear of volume III has extensive tape repairs. In general, volumes are good, but the Dickens check is fine.
