First edition in the original twenty numbers bound in nineteen parts. Octavo. [i-vii]viii[ix]x-xii[xiii]xiv[xv-xvi]. [1]2-624. Forty inserted plates including the frontispiece and vignette title. Original green printed wrappers with cover design by Phiz. Part II: first page of Advertiser is missing a portion near the fore-edge; part VII: first page of Advertiser is missing, second page of Advertiser missing about one-half, slip after plates is torn out, rear ads missing four pages out of eight; part VIII: wrappers loose, Advertiser missing pages 1 through 6, page 7 torn, with two copies of the Weekly Illustrated Periodical ad, and two copies of a John Leech ad (not called-for), the rare Letts Diaries ad lacking at rear, but the sample pages are present; part IX: rear ads missing final leaf of Hall catalogue and the two-page "Leila" ad; part XI: plates are uncaptioned; part XVI: rear wrapper missing upper corner, lacks both slips; part XVIII: rear Waterlow ad missing pages 3-8. Parts IV, VII and VIII have damaged wrappers, with either large tears or perished spines. Some moderate wear to wrappers, a few with tears; some soiling; a few parts with ownership signature on front wrapper. Some text pages with tears, wear. Overall, a fair copy. One of the rarer Dickens in parts. Chemised in cloth slipcase. Hatton and Cleaver pp. 253-272.
