    David Copperfield in Original Parts

Charles Dickens. The Personal History of David Copperfield. With Illustrations by H. K. Browne. London: Bradbury & Evans, Whitefriars, 1850. First edition in the original twenty numbers bound in nineteen parts. Octavo. [i-vii]viii[ix]x-xii[xiii]xiv[xv-xvi]. [1]2-624. Forty inserted plates including the frontispiece and vignette title. Original green printed wrappers with cover design by Phiz. Set collates nearly complete per Hatton and Cleaver, including the rare Lett's Diaries ad in VIII (samples of the diaries are often seen, but without the actual fold-out ad - this copy with six diary leaf samples). With the first issue misprint on the third advertisement in part VIII ("Lile" instead of "Life"). This copy lacks the slip after the plates in part IX. Part XII has the alternate version of the "Working Man's Library" ad in the back. Part XVI lacks the four-page Advertiser, as well as the "Punch's Holidays" slip. With an extra ad in Part XVIII ("Eliza Cook's Journal"). Two parts with previous owner's signatures on front wraps, two wrappers loose (yet all present), part I is split in half after the Advertiser, some soiling, first ten parts with more soiling and wear, the last several parts fairly clean. Plates generally clean and bright, some with expected modest edge-browning or offsetting. Text and ads generally quite fresh. No apparent restoration, which is not commonly seen. Set shows well. One of the rarer Dickens in parts. Housed in two burgundy clamshell cases. Hatton and Cleaver pp. 253-272.
