Charles Dickens. The Nonesuch Dickens. Bloomsbury: The Nonesuch Press, 1937-1938. First Nonesuch edition, limited to 877 sets; limitation determined by the number of original illustrated plates used in the first editions by Chapman and Hall, and each set includes a steel or wood block plate. This set includes the steel plate for the engraved title-page of Dickens's first book, Sketches by Boz, originally published in 1836. Twenty-three large octavo volumes, with steel plate housed in matching clamshell case; "A Note on the Format" pamphlet laid in. Publisher's buckram, black morocco gilt-lettered labels affixed to spines; top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Occasional light rubbing, worse on the plate case; some backstrips only slightly faded. Each free endpaper soiled with cellophane tape residue, with some offsetting opposite, at corners. A near fine collection with a significant steel plate.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
