First Nonesuch edition, limited to 877 sets, each including an original engraved steel plate or a woodblock, this set featuring Hablot K. Browne's [Phiz] "The old Couple" from Sketches of Young Couples and includes a pull taken from plate with letter of authenticity signed by Arthur Waugh. Twenty-three octavo volumes, with steel plate housed in matching clamshell case. Various paginations. Frontispieces, numerous illustrations, mostly in-text. Printed in the United Kingdom on Worthy rag paper. Publisher's uniformly-styled linen buckram, gilt-lettered black morocco labels affixed to spines; top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Bindings with general, very minor shelf wear at the extremities; very faint fading to some spines. Page edges lightly foxed with some mild dust soiling to the top edges; endpapers also foxed; some offsetting from illustrations. Near fine. Includes Nonesuch Dickensiana. Retrospectus and Prospectus. Bloomsbury: The Nonesuch Press, 1937. First edition. Illustrated, with facsimile plates of the original wrappers. An exceptional complete set.
