First Edition, in the Original Monthly Parts

Charles Dickens. Master Humphrey's Clock. With Illustrations by George Cattermole and Hablot Browne. Vol. I. [II. III.] London: Chapman and Hall, 1840-1841.

First edition, in the original twenty monthly parts (4 April 1840-27 November 1841); i.e., first edition, second issue, as the monthly parts were collected every four or five weeks from the original weekly numbers. Large octavo size, in sixes (10.4375 x 7 inches; 276 x 177 mm.). [8], 306; vi, 306; vi, 426 pages. With 198 wood-engraved text illustrations, including (according to Hatton and Cleaver) two frontispieces (Volumes II and III), 130 illustrations, and twenty-five decorative initials by H. K. Browne ("Phiz"); one frontispiece (Volume I) and thirty-eight illustrations by George Cattermole; one illustration by Samuel Williams (Volume I, page 46); and one illustration by Daniel Maclise (Volume II, page 108). The illustrations were engraved on wood by E. Landells, C. Gray, S. Williams, and Vasey.

Collates near complete, according to Hatton and Cleaver, lacking only the "Tyas's Popular Illustrated Publications" ad (2 pages) at the back of Part I, and pages 3/4 of the "Annuals, &c. for 1841" ad (4 pages) at the back of Part VII, which have been torn away.

In the original green wrappers printed in black with a design by Cattermole engraved on wood by E. Landells on the front wrappers, and advertisements on the inside front wrappers and the inside and outside back wrappers. The wrappers show some mostly light wear and soiling, the spine ends on most parts are chipped, most spines have been very neatly repaired. The text is slightly browned, with occasional light foxing and marginal soiling or staining. Some staining to pages 356 and 357 in Part XIX, visible on the adjacent leaves. A few leaves roughly opened. The text in Part V is largely unopened. Marginal pencil annotations on pages 57 and 59 in Part XIII. The plates are generally very clean, with some very occasional light foxing. An excellent set. Housed in a green cloth chemise with the label of Edmund Baylies on the front flap and a half dark green hard-grain morocco over green cloth book-backed pull-off case, the spine lettered in gilt with five raised bands.

The opening chapter of "The Old Curiosity Shop" begins on page [37] in Part I. The opening chapter of "Barnaby Rudge" begins on page [229] in Part XI. From the Victor Gulotta Collection.

Eckel, pages 67-70. Gimbel A50. Hatton and Cleaver, pages 161-182, Smith, Dickens, I, 6.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
