Four hand-colored steel-engraved plates (frontispiece and facing pages 52, 78 and 150) by and after John Leech and four wood-engraved text illustrations (on pages 37, 73, 119 and 164) by W.J. Linton after John Leech.

    Original publisher's light reddish brown vertically ribbed cloth. Covers decoratively stamped in blind with a single line border enclosing a decorative border of holly and ivy, front cover decoratively lettered in gilt within a wreath of holly leaves. Spine decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt. All edges gilt. Original pale green hand-painted endpapers. The Binding matches Todd's first impression, first issue with closest interval between the blindstamped left border and the left extremity of the gilt wreath measuring 14 mm. and with the D if Dickens unbroken.

    Spine lean; spine unevenly darkened; edges and corners worn with mild fraying at corners and spine ends; corners lightly bumped; gilt at front board and spine slightly faded; front board stained with two tiny ink spots, both less than one millimeter, and one raised, darkened bump, approximately one millimeter in diameter; rear board rubbed, approximately one-half inch; text-block minimally foxed. A bright and unsophisticated copy. Near fine. Housed in a custom chemise and clamshell case. Eckel, pp. 110-115. Smith II, 4.
