First edition, second state, with "Stave One" heading the first chapter, and uncorrected text. Small octavo. 166 plus two pages of advertisements. Four hand-colored engraved plates by John Leech, including a color frontispiece. Red and blue title page. Blue half-title page.
Custom full red morocco with five raised bands by Bayntun. Gilt ruled boards and compartments. Gilt titles and decoration to backstrip. Gilt inner dentelles with marbled endpapers. Reproduced on front with leather onlay is frontispiece image of the dancing Fezziwigs. Original cloth panels bound at rear. There is some dampstaining along bottom edge affecting front preliminary pages and along fore-edge affecting rear preliminary pages. Endpapers are offset from turn-ins. Scattered foxing throughout, also affecting plates. Overall, an attractive, near fine copy.
