    First edition. Three octavo volumes- each with a different frontispiece portrait of Darwin.

    Publisher's green cloth with gilt spine lettering and black endpapers. Evidence of removed lending library label on upper front covers (as was common in the late 19th century), slight bubbling to the front cover of the first volume, minor spine extremity wear and light foxing to prelims and edges. Overall, a handsome and sound copy of the first edition, in the publisher's cloth.

    From the library of prominent zoologist Oswald H. Latter, with his signature and date on the top blank margin of each title page. The latter was the author of numerous books of natural history including Elementary Zoology, Bees and Wasps, and The Natural History of Some Common Animals.
