    First Edition, Mixed Issue of The Descent of Man

    Charles Darwin. The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex. London: 1871. First edition, mixed issue, with second issue of volume I (with text corrected on page 297 so the first word is "when") and apparent first issue of volume II (with errata on verso of title and with tipped-in leaf "a serious and unfortunate error"; but lacking the half title [the verso of which represents another issue point]. Two octavo volumes. viii, 423; viii, 475 pages. Illustrated in the text. Modern half morocco, gilt, over marbled boards by Starr Bookworks. Spine gilt in compartments with four raised bands and lettered in gilt on polished calf lettering labels. Sheets a bit browned and with light soiling and foxing. Altogether a very good set. The first issue, of 2,500 copies was published on 24th February 1871 and the second issue of 2,000 copies appeared in March of the same year.
