Charles Chesnutt. The Conjure Woman. Cambridge: Riverside Press, 1899. First edition, the very scarce Large Paper issue of this important book.

    More Information:

Octavo. [2, blank], [vi], [230], [2, blank] pages. Publisher's original full brown buckram, printed paper label on spine. Spine a bit sunned, some thumbsoiling to spine label, some rubbing to binding, previous owner's signature ("H. F. Carleton") on the half-title. Just barely skewed. Still, a fine copy of this very rare item. According to Merle Johnson, the Large Paper issue was issued before the trade edition (published by Houghton Mifflin). This book was the first book by an African-American author to earn both critical and commercial success. The stories contained herein, written in dialect, were an accurate and unvarnished depiction of the life endured by African-Americans. Very rare - only one other copy has appeared at auction in the last fifty years.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
