    Description

Charles Baudelaire. Autograph Letter. One page in French, n.p.; Tuesday, November 3, [?]. In this brief letter to an unnamed correspondent, Baudelaire writes [English translation], "You sent me lines of verse without a butterfly, allow me to give you flowers with verse, and to prove to me that my taste has connected with yours, please wear them this evening in your buttonhole. Nature always embellishes Beauty. I am alive, and your flowers are architecture; so it must be that the flowers are Beauty since I am Nature. If Nature always embellishes Beauty! Then I assert your flowers and find myself very flattered!"
Charles Pierre Baudelaire (1821-1867) was a French poet who also produced notable work as an essayist, art critic, and pioneering translator of Edgar Allan Poe.
Condition: Letter has a horizontal fold.
