First edition, inscribed by the author on the half-title page: "To Mrs Davenport / with the Author's regards." Edward Davies Davenport's bookplate affixed to the front endpaper. Octavo (8.8125 x 5.625 inches; 224 x 143 mm.). [4], 240 pages with single leaf of ads inserted at rear (verso blank). Publisher's cloth, printed paper label affixed to spine. Front joint cracked but holding, backstrip partially detached from spine; paper label browned and worn, with some minor paper loss; spine ends and edges worn; corners bent; front board lightly rubbed with faint discoloration along the lower edge. Free endpapers curling slightly; some over-opening between gatherings. Still, about very good. Charles Babbage was an English engineer, mathematician and philosopher; he invented an early precursor to the digital computer, the difference engine.
