Inscribed Presentation Copy to Pan American World Airways President Harold E. Gray

Charles A. Lindbergh. The Spirit of St. Louis. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1953. First edition. An advanced copy inscribed by Lindbergh to Harold E. Gray, future President of Pan American World Airways on the title page: "To Harold E. Gray / with best wishes / Charles A. Lindbergh / August, 1953 / Publication date is Sept. 14th." Octavo. xii, [2], [1]-561 pages. Illustrated with numerous black-and-white photographs. Publisher's original blue cloth with titles stamped in silver on the spine. Silhouette of the Spirit of St. Louis stamped in silver on the front board. Illustrated endpapers. Two dust jackets: the original and a protective plasticized jacket. A tight copy with light shelf wear, mainly at the corners and spine ends. A bit of modest damp staining on the spine and top edge which hasn't affected the contents. Dust jacket with splits in the folds of the spine panel and wear along the edges. Back side with small damp stains and color bleed from the blue cloth boards. Still a very good copy in a fair original dust jacket which can be conserved and improved. Laid-in, are two interesting original photographs: one, a color 6.75 x 5" photo of Juan Trippe (1899-1981), founder of Pan American World Airways, Charles Lindbergh, and Harold E. Gray (1906-1972), circa late 1960 or early 1970s. The second photograph is a 4 x 5" black-and-white photograph of Lindbergh in the cockpit of a Curtiss Oriole. The reverse is annotated "Aprox. 1922 Lambert Fld. St. Louis / Charles Lindbergh in Curtis [sic] Oriole / Taken by John Noble".
