The Scarce Proof Copy of McCullers' First Novel, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, with its Original Title, The Mute

Carson McCullers. The Mute. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1940. Proof copy. Printed paper label on front cover has the title crossed out with a manuscript note (in an unknown hand) beneath it, "Title changed to/The Heart is a Lonely Hunter". Oblong octavo. Approximately 11.5 x 6.75 inches. 547 unnumbered pages, printed on rectos only. Publisher's burgundy cloth backstrip over plain grey paper and plain cardboard (front cover is paper, rear cover is cardboard). Inside front cover is a small typed card stating the tentative price and publication date (the publication date is changed from 3/20/40 to 6/4 in red ink). There is some occasional wear or foxing to pages, first several pages curled a bit at corners, some soiling to text fore-edge, previous owner's signature on first page, some wear and soiling to binding, front label is foxed and toned, upper corner of front wrapper is chipped, staple-binding is coming away from rear cover (yet still solid). There is a later postcard from the Gotham Book Mart, which states that this item came from the Carter Burden collection. Housed in custom-made quarter black morocco, gilt, clamshell case. A superb and rare item - virtually unobtainable elsewhere.
