    Description

Carson McCullers. The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1940. First edition of the author's first novel. Octavo. [iv], 356 pages. Publisher's brown buckram, front board and spine lettered in dark brown, in the original first issue dust jacket with Summer's Lease on the rear jacket flap. Backstrip faintly dulled; binding lightly rubbed; faint offsetting to endpapers. Jacket spine panel lightly sunned; occasional mild edgewear. Still, a handsome, near fine copy. From the collection of Donald Kaufmann.

More Information: According to Richard Wright, "[T]he most impressive aspect of The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter is the astonishing humanity that enables a white writer, for the first time in Southern fiction, to handle Negro characters with as much ease and justice of those of her own race. This cannot be accounted for stylistically or politically; it seems to stem from an attitude toward life."

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
