The Rare Galley Proof Copy of Carson McCullers' Second Novel, Reflections in a Golden Eye, Inscribed by Her

Carson McCullers. Reflections in a Golden Eye. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1941. Original Galley Proofs. Inscribed by McCullers on the first page: "For Gene Andrewsky [?]/Best/Carson McCullers". Printed paper label on front cover with a price ($2.00) and a date (January 28/41, possibly publication date) written in manuscript in an unknown hand at bottom. Oblong octavo. Approximately 11.5 x 6.75 inches. 547 unnumbered pages, printed on rectos only. Publisher's burgundy cloth backstrip over plain grey paper and plain cardboard (front cover is paper, rear cover is cardboard). 291 unnumbered pages, printed on rectos only. Some dampstaining to binding, especially near backstrip, some wear and a few creases to front cover, mild dampstaining and wear to rear cover, corners of text a bit bumped, some minor soiling to fore-edge of text. A wonderful example of a very rare item. Housed in quarter brown morocco clamshell case. This controversial book is considered by literary scholar Anthony Slide to be one of only four familiar gay novels of the first half of the twentieth century in the English language.
