Photographic portrait of John B. Charlton used as the frontispiece and seven additional plates. Publisher's original red cloth over boards with titles stamped in black on the front board and spine. A beautiful copy in fine condition.

    The author, Robert G. Carter was a Medal of Honor recipient and participated in many campaigns against Comanche and Kiowa Indians while serving in the 4th Cavalry.  Carter's story of his former comrade the "old sergeant", John B. Charlton was written from the many letters between the two men until Charlton's death in 1922. Many historic events are included in Carter's book including accounts of Mackenzie's raid into Mexico, the capture of outlaw "Red" McLaughlin, and the 4th Cavalry battles against the Comanche and Kiowa tribes of Texas.
