"...the classic work in both game theory and its application to decision-making in economics and business" (Bernstein)

John Von Neumann and Oscar Morgenstern. The Theory of Games and Economic Behavior. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1944. First edition. Octavo. [2, blank], xviii, 625, [3, blank] pages. With the rare Corrigenda leaf laid-in. Publisher's full brown cloth with spine stamped in burgundy and gilt. Spine very slightly sunned and rubbed. Some rubbing to corners. Text a bit toned. A few marginal notes in pencil throughout, some ink notations on Corrigenda leaf. Previous owner's signature on front pastedown. Overall, a fine copy.

John Von Neumann (1903-1957) and Oscar Morgenstern (1902-1977) founded the new branch of mathematics known as Game Theory, with this work. "Had it merely called our attention to the existence and exact nature of certain fundamental gaps in economic theory, Theory of Games and Economic Behavior...would have been a book of outstanding importance. But it does more than that. It is essentially constructive: where existing theory is considered to be inadequate, the authors put in its place a highly novel analytical apparatus designed to cope with the problem." (Hurwicz).

Bernstein (pages 237, 235). Leonoid Hurwicz, The World of Mathematics II, 1267-1284. From the James and Deborah Boyd Collection.
